Life in Montauk

Montauk is “The End” — literally the last stop on Long Island’s South Fork, and a genuinely different place from the villages to its west. It grew up as a working fishing port, not a resort town, and that history still shows: the harbor still runs commercial boats alongside charter fleets, and Montauk Point Lighthouse still marks the actual tip of the island. Over the past decade a surf-and-nightlife scene has grown up around that working-town core, drawing a younger, more casual crowd than East Hampton or Southampton — Montauk has real edge to it that the villages further west have mostly smoothed away.

Amenities & Lifestyle

Good to Know

Montauk’s real estate covers more ground than any other East End town — oceanfront bluff estates, classic surf cottages near the beach, downtown condos, and more affordable inland options, all within the same zip code. It’s historically offered better relative value than the villages further west, though that gap has narrowed as demand has grown. The concentration of hotels, motels, and short-term rental demand also makes Montauk a genuinely strong option for investment buyers specifically, not just primary or second-home buyers — worth factoring in separately from lifestyle fit.
